Henllys
Gwynedd
Sleeps: 6
Henllys is a pretty Welsh stone and slate cottage just a stone's throw from world famous Harlech Castle.
The cottage is situated in a flat lane off the high street, unlike so many other cottages which are on steep hills, so it is ideal for people with walking difficulties. The quiet location off the high street means you can relax in peace but stroll a few yards from shops, bank, pubs and restaurants. A walk away are miles of golden sands at the beach, the renowned Royal St David's golf course and the beauty of Snowdonia's mountains.
Henllys - the book of the cottage!
The book Every Day Was Summer charted the lives of the Williams family who lived in the cottage that became Henllys in Edwardian times. Mrs Williams was in service and worked for many celebrities of the time who holidayed around Harlech including Denis Finch Hatton - the big game hunter and
adventurer Robert Redford's character was based on in the film Out of Africa and George Bernard Shaw.
Harlech - a town as old as history
Harlech is an ancient town with origins wreathed in myth and mystery. The Mabinogion - a book of Welsh legends dating back centuries - has many stories set in and around Harlech. Edward I built the famous castle, Owen
Glendower, the famous prince of wales ruled his realm from Harlech. The surrounding mountains are full of magic lakes, ancient stone rings and mysterious encampments.
The rocky promontory on which Harlech stands is the oldest exposed rock in the world.
Today Harlech is a quiet town with good shops, restraurants and pubs just yards from Henllys front door.
Harlech is an excellent base for exploring Snowdonia and the beautiful beaches of North Wales, which start only a walk away. Golfers will also find a challenge at Royal St David's golf course, which nestles between Harlech and the beach. Another nearby attraction is Portmerion, the Italianate village used as the set for the cult TV series the Prisoner.
One of the best walks is the magical Roman Steps - a slate stairway cut in to a mountain pass above the beautiful Cwm Bychan lake.
